The headline number is that minds wandered off-task 46.9% of waking hours. Put another way, people in this sample were thinking about something other than what they were doing nearly half the time they were awake. That held true across ordinary daily life, not a small subset of boring tasks: mind-wandering occurred at least 30% of the time during every one of 22 tracked activities except one, lovemaking, which was the sole exception where attention reliably stayed on the present.

The finding that actually explains why this topic matters is a comparison of two predictors of happiness. Mind-wandering explained about 10.8% of the variance in happiness from moment to moment within the same person, and 17.7% of the variance in happiness between different people. The most substantial evidence review here is Goyal and colleagues’ systematic review and meta-analysis, the results of which were published in JAMA Internal Medicine in 2014 after being compiled as an evidence report for the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. The review pooled 41 randomized clinical trials covering roughly 2,993 participants total. It found moderate-strength evidence for real, measurable improvements from mindfulness meditation programs: an effect size of 0.40 for anxiety and 0.32 for depression at the 8-week mark, dropping somewhat to about 0.22 to 0.23 by the 3-to-6-month follow-up, plus an effect size of 0.33 for pain.

Those numbers are worth sitting with rather than skimming past. An effect size in the 0.3 to 0.4 range is real and statistically defensible, the kind of effect that shows up consistently across trials rather than by chance. But it is only rated “moderate” in strength of evidence, and only 10 of the 41 trials included in the review had a low risk of bias, meaning most of the existing mindfulness research is still short in duration and methodologically imperfect. The effects also faded somewhat over time rather than holding steady or growing, which matters for anyone expecting meditation practice to compound the way, say, physical strength training does with consistent effort.
