That analysis found no statistically significant effect on positive affect, negative affect, or life satisfaction. It also tested whether duration mattered and found that quitting for four weeks produced no better outcome than quitting for just one.
The authors’ proposed explanation is worth sitting with: the relief of escaping notifications, comparison, and constant scrolling may be offset by boredom or a genuine feeling of being cut off from real social contact, and those two effects can cancel each other out on average. That is not a failure of the research; it is a real, honest finding about what happens when people stop using social media altogether rather than moderating it.
This matters for anyone deciding what to actually do at home. Total abstinence and gradual reduction are not the same intervention, and this pair of meta-analyses shows they do not produce the same results. A family that expects a full week-long unplug to reliably lift everyone’s mood should know that the best current abstinence-specific evidence does not support that expectation, even though the reduction-focused evidence above does show a modest benefit for cutting back.
The Honest Takeaway: Reduction Beats Abstinence, and Evidence Is Still Thin
A 2024 Pediatrics review by Marciano, Jindal, and Viswanath synthesized 139 studies and concluded that reducing smartphone or social media time produced more consistent benefits than promoting total abstinence, including reduced anxiety and depression symptoms and improved life satisfaction in some of the studies reviewed. But the same review also noted studies reporting loneliness or relapse after a detox attempt, and effects that differed by gender and age, meaning what works for one teenager or one parent may not generalize to another.
The reviewers were direct about the state of the field, describing the evidence base as, in their own words, “too limited and poorly representative of different populations” to support strong policy claims. Short-term mood improvements after cutting back show up more reliably across studies than long-term life-satisfaction gains, which remain genuinely unclear even in the best available research.
The natural next question a parent asks after reading this far is whether to attempt a full detox or simply set limits, and the research gives a reasonably clear answer: modest, sustained reduction, such as app time limits or cutting notifications, is better supported than a weekend-long total unplug. That is a smaller, less dramatic recommendation than most digital-detox messaging suggests, but it is the one the strongest current evidence actually points to.
