Growth mindset interventions, in a meta-analysis of 43 effects across 57,155 students (Sisk et al., 2018, Psychological Science), showed only a small average effect on academic achievement (d ≈ 0.08), and the effect only reached significance in studies where the mindset manipulation itself had failed to check out, which casts doubt on the mechanism. A parent reading a book about grit to a child, or telling them “you can do anything if you believe in yourself,” is drawing on ideas that sound intuitive but rest on weaker evidence than most people assume.
