Is My Kid Using AI to Actually Learn, or Just to Cheat?
Direct answer: The line isn’t whether a child uses AI at all. Most already do. As of late 2025, 54% of 13-to-17-year-olds use AI chatbots for schoolwork, and most describe using it as a tutor (checking understanding, getting explanations) rather than a shortcut. The real distinction is whether they’re actively thinking through the material or just collecting a finished answer. Most kids already know, when asked directly, which side of that line they’re on.
The scale of this is bigger than most parents realize
AI homework use has grown fast: the share of middle-school-and-up students reporting AI use for homework help rose from 48% in May 2025 to 62% by December 2025. It’s close to the norm already, not a fringe behavior to watch for, which makes “banning AI entirely” a less realistic strategy than teaching the actual distinction that matters.
What “using AI to learn” looks like
Most students describe genuinely useful patterns: using AI to look up concepts, check their own understanding, get an explanation restated a different way, do preliminary research, or brainstorm ideas before writing something themselves. These uses keep the child doing the actual thinking. AI is answering “help me understand this,” not “do this for me.”
What crosses into cheating, and kids mostly already know it
Over half of students surveyed say they know that using AI to complete an assignment outright counts as cheating. That’s a useful fact for a parent: the child usually understands the rule already and is weighing a shortcut against a real deadline. Rather than leading with “did you know that’s wrong,” ask why the shortcut felt necessary in the moment. That’s the conversation that actually helps.
Why passive AI use has a real cost, even when it’s not “cheating”
Cognitive research is consistent on this point: deeper mental engagement with material produces stronger, more durable memory, while passively receiving an answer (even an accurate one) doesn’t build the same understanding. This is worth knowing even for uses that aren’t dishonest: a child who always has AI explain something, rather than working through it first, may be avoiding the exact effortful step that makes learning stick. Most students themselves are aware of this risk: two-thirds of surveyed students agreed that heavier AI use for schoolwork harms critical thinking skills over time.
A practical way to tell the difference at home
Ask your child to explain, in their own words and without looking at the AI’s answer again, what they actually learned or did. If they can walk you through it, the AI was a tool. If they can’t, the AI did the thinking for them, regardless of whether the assignment technically got “completed.”
